Britain’s National Cycle Network

In the late 70′s a small army of committed volunteers spent three months constructing the first five miles of an old disused Midlands Railway track  into a cycling and walking path, which with many more route marked quiet country lanes became over 10,000 miles of pleasant cycling covering most of the loveliest countryside in the UK . Maps are available from the organization and volunteers calledRangers keep the paths and signage up to date. Though it was awarded a large sum from the Lottery some time ago it still relies on private donations and local authority grants.
